Every High King has his High Queen, whose role cannot be underestimated. In the ritual of crowning the King at the Hill of Tara, the ceremony was to marry him spiritually to the sovereignty goddess of the land. The High Queen, in flesh and blood, became that role and thus formed the sacred union to preside over the land. Famous examples of a High Queen are Gormlaith, who was wed to two High Kings in her time and brought into the world two unbelievable men in Donnchad mac Briain, a High King later in life and Sitric Silkenbeard, the Norse Gael King of Dublin - both of these individuals survived the Battle of Clontarf. Gormlaith was well-versed in the art of medieval politics and lived her life by her own rules.
